Matched Genetic Counseling Student:

Breanna Lima Martinez is from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, and graduated from the University of Toronto in 2021 with a HBSc in Molecular Genetics and Microbiology. During her undergraduate study, she was involved with the Innis College Student Society, La Mosaic student magazine, and completed minors in Psychology and French Studies. Prior to entering the program, she was a volunteer at the Zane Cohen Centre for Digestive Diseases and Kids Help Phone. Outside of professional interests, Breanna is passionate about reading, watching movies, photography, and ice skating.

Student Initiatives:

During her time with CureMito, Breanna developed an informational graphic family planning guide for families with Leigh Syndrome. She also redesigned and formatted their Leigh Syndrome toolkit which includes resources for families and health care providers.

Proposed CureMito Foundation projects:

  • Creating a Leigh syndrome toolkit, which will be the primary place to go for families or clinicians looking for information on Leigh syndrome.

  • Develop materials regarding family planning, insurance coverage of genetic testing, and possibly some other resources.
